Inspector General gives high marks to Academy’s COVID-19 vaccination process

U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. - A report issued this month by the 10th Air Base Wing Inspector General’s Office said more than 10,000 people received coronavirus vaccinations this year at Air Force Academy.

That report, released April 27, said staff at the base’s 10th Medical Group “can currently administer over 200 shots per hour,” praised the Academy’s vaccination process as “impressive” and “well organized,” and noted that the school had not wasted a dose of the vaccine as of April 27.

Doctor (Maj.) Michelle Floyd, the 10th MDG’s deputy chief of medical staff and allergy immunizations officer, said more than 14,000 patients were administered the coronavirus vaccine at the base this year.

“Of those more-than-10,000 vaccinations the IG report refers to, more than 6,400 patients have received two doses and more than 1,500 patients received one dose,” she said.

Topping that off, 10th MDG staff dispensed those vaccinations without wasting any doses.

“We have great communication up and down our vaccine lines to account for doses and patient flow, from our Academy alumni volunteers to our technicians drawing up the vaccines, to the team administering to patients,” Floyd said. “The 10th MDG staff has made vaccine distribution a priority. During a recent vaccination-distribution day, we administered the coronavirus vaccine to more than 1,000 patients.”

The 10th MDG provides care for the Academy’s community of cadets, staff, faculty, family members and Tricare beneficiaries.

“We continue to support the Defense Department’s COVID vaccine mission, consistent with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control,” Floyd said.

Most vaccinations at the Academy have occurred during its weekly vaccination events at Clune Arena.
