RICHMOND, Va. (April 30, 2021) – Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Richmond held a virtual change of command ceremony where Cmdr. Charles R. Harmon relieved Cmdr. Kristopher D. Klaiber as commanding officer.
Capt. Katrina L. Hill, commodore, Navy Recruiting Command Region East, served as the presiding officer for the ceremony, streamed live to civilian and military personnel via Facebook.
When Klaiber assumed duties and the commanding officer and Harmon checked in as the Executive Officer XX months ago, things were completely different than they were now.
They stepped into a command, Navy Recruiting District Richmond, which was having difficulty meeting their recruiting goals and one operating and structured a completely different way than it is now.
As if that weren’t enough, they were faced with and are continuing to deal with the challenges brought on by COVID-19 beginning in March of 2020.
However, through their leadership and the tenacity of their recruiters, an amazing thing happened, they started making their monthly goals and were one of the few recruiting districts nation-wide who achieved their annual goal for 2020.
Klaiber said he couldn’t be more proud of how our recruiters rose above the challenges they faced in 2020.
He added recruiters not being able to go to schools, shopping centers, take part in job fairs, or people being nervous to even step into a recruiting station, made an already job difficult job exponentially harder.
“You have taught me what the true definition of resilience looks like,” Klaiber said to his command via Facebook Live. “Thank you very much for placing your trust in me to guide us as your commanding officer these last 20 months.”
Harmon, no stranger to recruiting, previously worked at the Military Entry and Processing Station Beckley in his native West Virginia, served as the Executive Officer for NRD Richmond/NTAG Richmond, relieved Klaiber.
Some of Harmon’s previous tours include one of the first Ensigns in the Human Resource Community at the Navy Personnel Command, Enlisted Programs Officer at Navy Recruiting District Pittsburgh, Officer in Charge of Special Operations Command in Doha, Qatar, and the N131 Officer of Plans and Policy in Washington, DC, just to name a few.
Harmon thanked team Richmond for accepting and supporting him in his role as their Executive Officer and said he was excited to serve as their Skipper.
“I believe you are the greatest group of Sailors and civilians I have served with in all my 29 years,” he told them.
Harmon added that the commands dedication to the mission is amazing; they are by far the best NTAG in Navy recruiting and they prove that month after month.
“Thank you so much for all that you do, not only for out Navy but the communities and citizens you serve,” he said.
