CAMP BONDSTEEL, Kosovo— Soldiers assigned to Regional Command-East, Kosovo Force, observed Denim Day at Camp Bondsteel on April 28, 2021, as the culminating event for Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month. Denim Day is observed internationally to support victims of sexual assault.

“We allow Soldiers the opportunity to wear denim that day [Denim Day] to fight misconceptions around sexual assault,” said Maj. Sarah Jacobs, the sexual assault response coordinator for RC-E. “It’s a chance to shine some light on what those misconceptions are so we can continue to learn and move past them.”

Denim Day focuses on rejecting the misconception that a victim was responsible for their assault because of the clothing they were wearing. Wearing denim sends a message that individuals stand with and support victims who have been blamed for their assault by what they chose to wear.

“It’s a way we can fight against sexual assault,” said Maj. Joseph Whalen, a victim advocate for RC-E. “It doesn’t matter what you’re wearing. There is no excuse for sexual assault.”

Denim Day is recognized around the globe, and is a significant day in the U.S. Army’s Sexual Harassment and Assault Response and Prevention program’s calendar.

“We talk about these layers that exist for men and women in the world and in the military,” said Jacobs. “They affect how we experience things and the stereotypes that exist for both men and women.”

Every unit has assigned victim advocates standing by to help and provide support to victims of sexual assault.

“As a victim advocate, I’m available to be there, to listen and to provide support for any victim, any friend of a victim or anyone who wants to talk and have that conversation if needed,” said Whalen.
