CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas – (April 26, 2021) – The Navy’s Virtual Reality Experience, the “Nimitz,” joined by talent scouts assigned to Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) San Antonio and officers assigned to Navy Recruiting Command’s (NRC) Office of Outreach and Diversity visited with Flour Bluff High School to spread Navy awareness and to pique students’ interest about America’s Navy.
The experience started with registration, a mission briefing, donning on rumble packs and virtual reality headsets, and immersion into the mission.
The mission consisted of a virtual high-speed water extraction of a Navy SEAL team pinned down under enemy fire.
Once the students completed the mission, they were graded on how they responded to five separate mission commands.
According to retired Cmdr. Bill Hughen, of San Antonio, the Senior Naval Science instructor at the school, having the Nimitz on campus was a great opportunity.
“As soon as we heard of the opportunity to have the Nimitz here, we jumped at it,” said Hughen who has been leading the school’s Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) program for four years. “This school district is so pro-NJROTC that they had no issues with the Nimitz being on campus. With the current environment, and not being able to have a NROTC Day with the Blue Angels, it’s a blessing for kids to have the Nimitz here.”
For Cadet Petty Officer 2nd Class Phillip Beck, of Galveston, Texas, a junior attending Flour Bluff High School, the Nimitz was amazing.
“This was really fun and I enjoyed it,” said Beck. “I’ve done VR at friends’ homes, but it compares to nothing like this.”
The Navy is looking for smart, driven individuals who are eager to serve, and who are not only seeking a better future for themselves and their families, but also for the county.
“Having the Nimitz at the school allowed many of the students to see a snippet of what type of experiences one can have in the Naval Special Warfare/Special Operations specialty,” said Interior Communications Technician 2nd Class Naomi Ramos, of San Antonio, a talent scout assigned to Navy Recruiting Station (NRS) Corpus Christi, Talent Acquisition Onboarding Center (TAOC) Alamo City. “This makes them more excited and motivate. Additionally, they feel more comfortable to talk with us about career opportunities in the Navy.”
NTAG San Antonio’s area of responsibility includes two TAOCs which manage more than 34 Navy Recruiting Stations and Navy Officer Recruiting Stations spread throughout 144,000 square miles of Central and South Texas territory.
NRC consists of a command headquarters, three Navy Recruiting Regions, 26 NTAGs, and 64 TAOCs that serve more than 1,000 recruiting stations around the world. Their mission is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
