TEMPLE, Texas - (April 9, 2021) Sailors assigned to Navy Recruiting Station (NRS) Temple, Talent Acquisition Onboarding Center (TAOC) Capital City, joined by the Temple Police Department, friends, and neighbors, gathered at the residence of retired Chief Petty Officer Joseph New to help him celebrate his 90th birthday.

Naval Aircrewman (Helicopter) 2nd Class Katherine Knox, of Copperas Cove, Texas, NRS Temple’s leading petty officer, along with Operations Specialist 1st Class Trevon Jacksonlyons, and Chief Navy Counselor Brian Ozment, attended to honor New.

“This demonstrates that the Navy is a family whether you on are active duty, in the reserves or retired,” said Knox. “This also bring Navy Awareness to the community and shows them that we care.”

New, a native of Troy, S.C., was raised in Washington, D.C., and joined the Navy in 1952 serving for 20 years as a ship’s serviceman.

He served on numerous ships to include the aircraft super carrier, USS Independence (CV-62) which was commissioned on Jan. 10, 1959 and decommissioned on Sept. 30, 1998.

James Johnson, a health coach with Central Texas Veterans Healthcare System, has known New for more than 15 years.

“Mr. New came into my facility one day as a veteran in need of reconditioning and has been coming ever since. We put him on a program and we became friends,” said Johnson who lives one block from New. “We have been conducting birthday celebrations for Mr. New for years, but this one was special; how many times does a person turn 90 years old?”

After being presented with Navy memorabilia, along with a 2021 Navy Fiesta Medal by Knox, New stated, “It’s been a great 90 years and I’m looking forward to the next 90 years.”

Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) San Antonio’s area of responsibility includes two TAOCs which manage more than 34 Navy Recruiting Stations and Navy Officer Recruiting Stations spread throughout 144,000 square miles of Central and South Texas territory.
