FORT KNOX, Ky. – The 2021 All In to End Child Abuse campaign is in full force around Fort Knox in an effort to bring the community together in keeping children safe.
This year’s tagline: “Our first duty is to our next generation.”
Stacey Hanes, from the Fort Knox Family Advocacy Program, said while her focus is to raise awareness on the installation, child abuse is a widespread issue.
“Whether you are a member of the military or not, child abuse is happening all around us,” said Haynes. “It’s important for everyone to know the signs of abuse and neglect.”
The Defense Department has designated April as Child Abuse Prevention Month each year, and Fort Knox officials are using it to highlight CAPM’s campaign in a number of ways.
In addition to displays at Barr Memorial Library, Garrison Headquarters, the Child Development Center and the School Age Center, there are also daily posts on the Army Community Service Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ACSFTKNOX), which provides information about support and resources.
Haynes said Facebook is also the place for Families to get directly involved in another special event.
“There will be two Family scavenger hunts,” say Haynes. “Every day there will be a trivia question [posted]. If you answer correctly, a clue will be messaged to you. The first to find the Fort Knox ‘golden item’ hidden on the installation will win a prize package.”
Families can also participate in other activities, such as workshops at Devers Middle School Teen Center with a focus on empathy, including a special virtual workshop on April 15 called Puppy Love 101.
“It’s a workshop about caring for a puppy using kindness, empathy and encouragement,” said Haynes. “Participants will get a free plush puppy and certificate for completing the class.”
Haynes stressed the campaign isn’t only about prevention itself but also serves as a reminder of the many resources offered through ACS for those who witness something, or need help themselves.
She added how important it is to always be vigilant for signs of abuse.
“When you see a (military) Family with a lot of stressors, throw them a lifeline and connect them with ACS,” said Haynes. “If ACS doesn’t provide the service they need, they know who does and will link them up.”
Haynes encourages community members to educate themselves on all the resources available, reminding them that no one is ever alone in the fight to end child abuse.
“Everyone goes through challenging times,” said Haynes. “ACS is here to help.”
