10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command

BAUMHOLDER, Germany -- They walked out one by one grasping a deep breath in and exhaling out as the feeling of the unknown trembles in their minds over the next four months.

It has been a long 18 months of preparation, and the next 48-hour period will decide who takes home the trophy.

“From day one, we train you to be a master,” said Sgt. 1st Class Jean Tippenhauer, NCOIC assigned to 5th Battalion, 7th Air Defense Artillery Regiment, Support Supply Activity.

Soldiers in the 5-7 SSA, 10th Army Air and Missile Defense Command recently found themselves in the winner’s bracket for the 2020 U.S. Army Europe and Africa Supply Excellence Award (SEA).

“It means alot, not just to me, but to the Soldiers as well,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Samuel Adeyemi, Supply Support Activity accountability officer. “In a unit where you are regarded as a support MOS Soldier, it’s nice to be spotlighted.”

The SEA recognizes supply excellence at the various unit and organizational levels. The program was established to instill personal challenges to individual Soldiers, create group competition, and provide a management tool to ensure standardization. The goal is to increase public awareness of supply excellence within the U.S. Army.

“The SEA is like the playoffs of supply, ” said Sgt. 1st Class Tippenhaur. “We’ve been playing the game, and now it's time to elevate to the next level.”

No stranger to the clinging sound of pipes, Soldiers from the 5-7 SSA trained rigorously to perfect their skills, just as an athlete trains to enhance their performance.

    Practice makes perfect.

The end game for this competition is to win, but in order to accomplish this goal, CW2 Adeyemi had to put the preparation and coordination into the hands of his Soldiers.

The 5-7 SSA is composed of five sections, to include, stock control, receiving, issuing, turn in, and storage. The two-day fierce competition examines all aspects of these sections involving overall knowledge, standard operating procedures, and safety regulations.

“I went above and beyond for my section and I really enjoyed the challenge,” said Sgt. Juanite Hughes, stock control NCOIC.

The line up was set. Each section held an MVP to focus on performance aspects in executing their skills in an effective manner. By doing so, the results spoke for themselves.

“We are very well-organized,” said Sgt. Seon Kim, storage section NCO. “Everything we do is strategically planned out and we follow specific standards that makes us stand out more than others.”

The 5-7 SSA set the standards high for the overwhelming and massive environment of supply. Competing in this competition is essential when it comes to sharpening the tools it takes to excel within the MOS, individually and as a whole.

“If you don’t use your skills, you lose them,” said CW2 Adeyemi.

On-site training doesn't start or stop with this competition. The 5-7 SSA was preparing for this competitive award long before the application hit CW2 Adeyemi’s desk.

Weekly on-site training is conducted to ensure every Soldier is confident in their job responsibilities.

“My main role is to provide guidance and motivation to help my Soldiers believe that they're capable of doing greater things,” said Sgt. 1st Class Tippenhauer. “I want to help get them recognized for doing their daily operation at the highest level possible.”

The 5-7 SSA is providing the blueprint for future soldiers and leaders on what excellence looks like.

After four nerve-racking months and with the click of a button, the 5-7 SSA was crowned Champions.

“We do a great job in maintaining positive control,” said Sgt. Jeune Evalle, issue section NCOIC. “We have a system and it works.”
