NAVAL BASE VENTURA COUNTY (March 16, 2021) -- Naval Construction Group (NCG) ONE Seabees transformed a softball field into a versatile family park during a multi-year project at Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC), the West Coast homeport of the U.S. Navy’s Seabees.

“All the work we get to do at this base is an honor and a privilege,” said Capt. Matthew Riethmiller Commander, NCG 1. “This project helped increase our readiness, and all the better, the new Stingers Park is here, where we call home.”

The Commodore made his remarks during a ribbon-cutting to officially open the 46,000-square foot park that includes a pavilion, fenced playground, basketball court, beach volleyball court, sound stage, picnic tables and barbecue grills.

“For all the families who make Port Hueneme home this is a wonderful space to make memories. We look forward to the summer when we all can get out here and celebrate with hamburgers, volleyball, and maybe even a concert or two,” said Capt. Jeff Chism, Commanding Officer, NBVC.

The Stingers Park project was crafted by Seabees from Naval Mobile Constriction Battalions THREE, FOUR and FIVE. The park took a few years to complete because of deployments and other projects but worth the wait, said the Commodore.

“We worked on this park when we were able to fit it into our training schedule. I’m very happy the way it turned out,” Riethmiller said.

Now that the field is complete, the installation’s Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) department will take over its operations.

“Our MWR team is excited at all the possibilities of this multi-purpose event space,” said Jacob Munyon, NBVC’s MWR Director. “We envision a summer concert series here and Stingers Park is sure to be the centerpiece of many special events going forward.”

Special events like Winter Wonderland, Summerfest and Halloween will be able to operate with extended hours not dictated by the Sun.

“The new built-in lighting the Seabees installed gives us so many more options at this great open space for our military members and their families,” Munyon added.
