The 2021 Tax Season deadline is April 15 and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune service members, their families, and military retirees can still take advantage of the free tax preparation services offered by the MCB Camp Lejeune Tax Center.
The tax center officially opened its doors Jan. 25, 2021. Marines assigned to the tax center during the tax season are qualified through the completion of a 25-hour Jackson Hewitt qualification course and a law certification course through the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). This ensures the service member’s taxes are processed properly and on time.
“I suggest that Marines file at the tax center as opposed to going out in town because it is more cost effective,” said Staff Sgt. John Quinton, MCB Camp Lejeune Tax Center staff noncommissioned officer, Marine Corps Installations East-MCB Camp Lejeune. “We go through training on state taxes and there are many states that have tax exemptions for being active duty military stationed outside of their home state of record. There are many Marines who go out in town and do not get the money they deserve from their states and they also pay North Carolina taxes when they do not need to.”
To file your taxes, bring documentation to include: W-2’s, 1099’s and documents for spouses, including power of attorney as needed. The tax center will create copies of documentation and exchange contact information with the clients. After the taxes have been entered into the system, the client will receive a call explaining the refund amount and will be able to pick up their documentation at their earliest convenience.
“I use the tax center on base for the simple fact that it is close to my residence, and it is easy to make an appointment,” said Cpl. Amelia Tuttle, a passenger travel specialist with Headquarters and Support Battalion, MCIEAST-MCB Camp Lejeune. “The people are professional and make the process go by quickly, and I save money because they offer the free filing.”
The Camp Lejeune Tax center is located at Bldg. 50 on Lucy Brewer Ave. off of Holcomb Boulevard on MCB Camp Lejeune. The hours of operation are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesday is reserved for unit and individual appointments from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Due to COVID-19, the tax center offers contactless filing for the 2021 tax season.
In compliance with CDC guidelines and DoD regulations, the tax center cannot allow clients to wait within the building for service at this time. Instead, clients will be required to check in at the front desk upon arrival, and wait in their vehicles until they are called. Please plan your visit accordingly.
