The U.S. Marine Corps is no stranger to answering the call of those in need, and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune answered that call to help a local high school.

The base partnered with Swansboro High School to ensure their sports season went on despite flooding that rendered the fields unusable and the COVID-19 pandemic forcing fall sports to the spring. Under the glowing stadium lights, Swansboro High School students faced off against students from Havelock High School’s varsity and junior varsity boys’ soccer teams on Liversedge Field on MCB Camp Lejeune on Feb. 25, 2021.

“The amount of rain we received over January and February really put a damper on getting games in, so to be able to use this great turf facility is just a blessing,” said Doug Kidd, Swansboro High School soccer head coach. “We are extremely thankful to everyone at Camp Lejeune for helping us out and letting us play over here, this really gives us hope that we can complete the season, and we are just extremely thankful to everyone involved to make this happen.”

MCB Camp Lejeune will host future competitions between the Pirates of Swansboro High School and other local area schools for varsity lacrosse, varsity football, and both junior varsity and varsity soccer for the girls’ and boys’ teams.

“They’ve missed a lot games because of their fields’ condition, and the right thing for us to do is to help them out,” said U.S. Marine Corps Col. Todd W. Ferry, the deputy commander for Marine Corps Installations East-Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune. “With the lessons that we learned in the pandemic over the last year, we’ve done a lot of work on base and have really worked with the local schools and this is a testament to how we can help.”
