    Naval Medical Center San Diego

SAN DIEGO – Lt. Joshua Johnson, an anesthesiology resident assigned to Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) received the Capt. Cheryl C. Ringer Memorial Award for Continuous Process Improvement (CPI) Jan. 22.
Johnson was surprised by a roomful of his colleagues and a video teleconference with Rear Adm. Timothy Weber, Commander, Naval Medical Forces Pacific and Director of the Medical Service Corps, who presented him with the award virtually.
Capt. Scott Wallace, NMCSD’s Anesthesiology Department’s chairman, said Johnson is in his second of three years in the department’s residency program.
“Johnson and his essay personify the goals of [NMCSD’s Anesthesiology Department],” said Wallace. “Our number one priority is to provide the safest and highest quality care to each and every one of our patients. We provide anesthesia services to patients in over 30 locations throughout the command, and we rely on simple ideas and motivated, vigilant staff members to ensure patients are safe while receiving anesthesia services. Patients trust us to keep them safe and we are grateful for their trust. Johnson and his staff accepted my vision to always keep patients safe, and were empowered to improve broken [or] suboptimal processes for the safety of both staff and patients in the future.”
Johnson’s winning submission, titled “Excellence in the Basics,” presented a solution to a potential issue when anesthetizing pediatric patients in NMCSD’s Radiology Department’s MRI suite.
According to his essay, Johnson proposed conducting pre-procedure “time outs,” a protocol where everyone in attendance reviews “standardized roles and safety checks to complete the ‘time out’ efficiently and without overlooking any safety items.”
The essay was originally submitted during NMCSD’s annual CPI Fair to share our methods and findings with the rest of the hospital.
Johnson said essay received first place for the Phillis Ann Robertson Memorial People’s Choice Award out over 100 submissions.
“[When I found out that one of my residents was receiving an award presented by Rear Adm. Weber,] I was ecstatic,” said Wallace. “I was so happy for Johnson, the anesthesia residency leadership and NMCSD. I was very impressed that Rear Adm. Weber and his staff [had taken] time out of their busy schedules to recognize Johnson’s great work. Johnson inspires his fellow residents. He has a quiet, humble personality and is a truly-gifted resident, educator, provider and leader. He sets the bar high and motivated his resident colleagues to perform at their best.”
As with any medical profession, anesthesiology residents have vast amounts of knowledge to learn before completing their residency.
“Anesthesiology residents learn the art and science of sedation, general anesthesia, regional anesthesia and neuraxial anesthesia,” said Wallace. “This involves [first] learning about a patient’s medical history [and] the physiologic stresses and demands of surgery, [then] providing and executing an anesthetic plan that keeps the patient safe during a surgery or procedure. Anesthesiology residents complete rotations in basic, advanced, pediatric, regional, cardiothoracic, obstetrical, vascular and neuroanesthesia, as well as trauma, critical care medicine and pain medicine.”
NMCSD’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
