This month, the Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support workforce is encouraged to wear denim on Fridays as part of the final installment of DLA’s Not Just April sexual assault awareness campaign. Employees are asked to wear denim, from jeans to jackets, or hats, to show their support of the DLA Sexual Assault Prevention and Response program.
The month-long campaign is not intended to replace the internationally-recognized Denim Day, which is held annually on the last Wednesday in April, said Gina Ingrao, the DLA Troop Support Sexual Assault Response Coordinator.
In previous years, more than 200 DLA Troop Support and Naval Support Activity Philadelphia tenant employees would participate in a mile-long walk in support of Sexual Assault Awareness Prevention month in April while wearing teal t-shirts and denim.
“This year has been unique in how our workforce was able to show their support for the SAPR program while working from home or the office,” Ingrao said. “Our resilience and flexibility has shone through, and it has been a pleasure receiving everyone’s photos from our Walk A Mile campaign in September and Teal Tuesdays in July. I look forward to receiving more photos of the workforce decked out in denim.”
DLA employees were highlighted on the agency’s social media platforms for each event, acknowledging their participation in the virtual campaign.
“The outpouring of support from our workforce for our ‘Not Just April’ campaign has been overwhelming,” Ingrao said. “Participants in this year’s events will be recognized during Sexual Assault Awareness Prevention Month in April 2021.”
The annual Denim Day campaign started more than 20 years ago years ago, according to the Denim Day website. A rape ruling by the Italian Supreme Court was overturned because the justices felt that since the victim was wearing tight jeans she must have helped the person who raped her remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim. The next Denim Day will take place on April 29, 2021.
Participants are encouraged take photos of their denim outfits, which can be sent to sapr@dla.mil and gina.ingrao@dla.mil. Identify yourself as a member of the Troop Support workforce when sending in photos.
