    RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany –

An Airman assigned to the 496th Air Base Squadron at Morón Air Base, Spain, was honored as Airlifter of the Week, Oct. 8, 2020.

The 496th ABS is one of the 86th Airlift Wing’s geographically separated units. The primary mission of the 496th ABS is to support the needs of the U.S. Air Force by projecting rapid global mobility and combat air power within Europe and Southwest Asia, as well as Africa.
Staff Sgt. Alejandra Morales, 496th ABS airfield management noncommissioned officer in charge, took on three airfield projects where she coordinated efforts with the airfield manager and Spanish air force airfield operations.

“We maintain overall safety of the airfield, direct all construction projects, monitor air traffic, coordinate services for aircrews, manage all airfield drivers and minimize wildlife hazards. No two days are ever the same,” Morales said.

The synchronization of the projects, which totaled $3 million, allowed 1,100 Department of Defense and Spanish air force missions to operate.

In addition, Morales provided translations needed to facilitate the approval of parallel taxiway repairs.

“I was born in Colombia so I'm a native Spanish speaker,” Morales said. “It feels great knowing that the services I provide project airpower at a global level.”

Morales also led a five-member contractor team to make repairs and ensure the protection of 30 fighter and 12 large-body aircraft parking spots for the continued support of four combatant commands.

In addition to maintaining the airfield, Morales also ensured the training and readiness of inbound Airmen by revising the local airfield management training plan and qualifying four recently arrived airfield management deployers.

“I joined for the opportunity to see the world, and airfield management has been the gateway to that dream,” Morales said. “I'm grateful for the blessings this awesome career field has brought into my life.”
