The Army Virtual Ten-miler began the morning of Oct 12. The 1st Infantry Division Band, the Commanding General’s Mounted Color Guard and community partners gathered at the starting line near Fort Riley’s Whitside Fitness Center to support the official team. Due to the pandemic, the run was shifted from the traditional Washington D.C. location to dispersed hosting locations across the world.
Although the event was dispersed around the world, many participants appreciated the effort to maintain the race under protective conditions.
“This will be the fifth time for me running the race,” said Chief Warrant Officer 2 Christy Salmond, Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, 1st Infantry Division. “I was a little disappointed when I found out it wasn’t being held in D.C. due to COVID-19. However, I’m super excited that the 1st Infantry Division and the Fort Riley Garrison command were able to work with us and put together this great event. Everyone involved worked very hard, and that means a lot to me as I’m able to continue the time-honored tradition of running in this event.”
“I’ve run in this event for the last couple of years in DC,” said Maj. Gen. D.A. Sims, Commanding General, 1st Infantry Division and Fort Riley. “It’s amazing to be able to do it here.
You don’t normally get this opportunity, and it really is an opportunity, to run the Army Ten-Miler in Kansas. This is a perfect Kansas morning, and to watch our team kind of have home field advantage this time is a really big deal. It’s fantastic.”
The event featured a livestream of the competition with Fort Campbell, Joint Base Lewis-McChord and Fort Drum participating on a single stream alongside Fort Riley. Runners were filmed by a chase vehicle with a camera crew as they wound around historic Camp Funston and back again to the track near Whitside Fitness Center. Water stations, live music and community supporters were available for the runners and spectators.
“I think it’s great we’re running this event here even if it is virtual,” said Col. William McKannay, Fort Riley Garrison Commander. “But, it’s also an opportunity for our Army team and partners from Kansas State University, surrounding communities, and friends and family from Fort Riley to run on a closed course for the event. Here is an opportunity for them to go for their record time, or just come out and have fun. Our Fort Riley Morale, Welfare and Recreation organization did a fantastic job setting up today’s event!”
“We wanted to do our best to help,” said Melvin Allen, Fort Riley MWR sports coordinator. “We had some great help from organizations in the surrounding community who really supported us in bringing this all together.”
The run began at approximately 8 a.m. Runners were tracked by an official app which sent individual times and rankings to a centralized race office for compiling into official race results. The route wound through historic Camp Funston and back to the Whitside Fitness Center running track. . Air Force cadet Holden Gifer finished first with a time of approximately 1 hour and 3 minutes. A trophy ceremony wasn’t able to take place due to COVID-19 restrictions; however, Gifer did receive a coin from the Fort Riley Garrison commander.
