COVID-19 has caused everyone to make drastic changes to their daily schedules. Maintaining social distance, avoiding large crowds/gatherings, and staying consistent with sanitation practices has become a mandatory part of life. These changes have caused us to rely heavily on technology to function to maintain some sense of normality.
The Army, along with other military branches, has now turned to virtual training. Recently Master Sgt. Lisa Cepeda-Nicholas, an equal opportunity advisor, enrolled in an Equal Opportunity Advisor Reserve Component Course. It is the first virtual course of its type. The purpose of the EOARCC is to train and certify the Department of Defense Reserve Component personnel assigned to military and civilian EO billets as EO Advisors. This virtual training consists of 23 online modules for Phase 1 and then 28-days resident (virtual) Phase 2.
"I have been managing with this rigorous schedule by completing all my assignments on time and doing my homework at the end of class each day," stated Cepeda-Nicholas. "I prefer in-class sessions; however, while attending this course, we have been using Microsoft Teams, and we're able to interact and see our classmates as we work on different assignments."
Before attending the training, students selected for the EOARCC must complete all online modules DEOMI in-residence training. Both advanced distributed learning (ADL) and traditional lectures were given in-residence to provide basic knowledge about a subject.
The second learning phase was conducted in small group discussions with activities that included research, writing papers, making presentations, and role-playing. Cepeda-Nicholas class, was made up of service members from several military branches located globally.
