HOHENFELS, Germany – The Soldiers of the 703rd Brigade Support Battalion, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division displayed their abilities on the night-time battlefield on when they sought to repel an opposing forces’ attack in during Combined Resolve XIV.

The attack occurred on the fourth night of the multinational exercise, which includes 4,100 participants from eight NATO ally and partner nations on the northwest corner of the 40,000-acre U.S. Army’s Hohenfels Training Area. One of the top priorities of Combined Resolve is to evaluate and assess the readiness and defense capabilities of the elements in the 2nd ABCT.

Sgt. 1st Class Michael Mucha, an Observer Coach/Trainer from JMRC’s Adler team, was monitoring the attack that night.

“The 703rd had some lapses in its security, but they eventually pulled together as a team and attempted to repel the enemy forces,” Mucha said. “According to reports, the 703rd was the best BSB they have seen, and they keep improving.”

The opposing forces began the surprise attack under the cover of darkness with indirect fire from notional artillery rounds and mortars. A small squad of OPFOR then attempted to overtake the perimeter of the 703rd’s temporary logistical supply point.

After no reply to initial perimeter challenges, the 703rd Soldiers quickly transitioned to white light and organized in the attempt to prevent OPFOR from advancing.

The OPFOR overran the supply points and dispatched about a half dozen 703rd Soldiers at point-blank range, which takes the forces out in the battlefield scenario.

Combined Resolve XIV is a Headquarters Department of the Army directed Multinational exercise designed to build 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division’s readiness and enhance interoperability with allied forces to fight and win against any adversary.
