Story by Staff Sgt. Cary Smith

Emergency responders from the U.S. and Royal Saudi Air Forces conducted an emergency response training exercise at Prince Sultan Air Base, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Sept. 22, 2020.

The training exercise was designed to increase interoperability between partners for responses to emergencies on the base.

“This exercise was huge for PSAB, as it was the first one of this scale that involved both partners,” said Maj Jones, 378th Air Expeditionary Wing Chief of Wing Plans. “We wanted to leverage this opportunity to strengthen our relations, expand capabilities and develop an understanding for our collective strengths and weaknesses.”

The training exercise was led by RSAF safety and emergency response teams with U.S. providing support.

RSAF medical and fire response teams raced out to the flightline as the exercise began. While firefighters simulated controlling a fire near one of the hangars, other responders assisted trauma patients during the training.

A line of ambulances and medical staff staged a triage area to handle the several simulated casualties coming in.

When U.S. responders arrived, they jumped in to aid the RSAF in their efforts.

“We were in contact with the RSAF incident commander, who controlled the scene, and from his direction, we were able to send U.S. support where needed,” said Tech. Sgt. Rendon, 378th Expeditionary Civil Engineer Squadron Fire Department, assistant chief of operations. “I initially sent our firefighters to help secure the hangar, then to assist with casualties.”

Once the fire was deemed safe, firefighters focused their attention on the triage site to help load patients into ambulances. It was all done swiftly and efficiently, with U.S. and RSAF helping one another.

According to Rendon, training exercises like this help streamline communication efforts and strengthen the working relationship to respond to a wider array of possible emergencies, and show opportunities to improve our combined efforts.

With the first ever large scale emergency response exercise in the books, U.S. and Royal Saudi Air Forces will continue to build upon and strengthen their partnership and maximize mission capabilities for the future.
