PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii – A Ridley Park, Pennsylvania native, successfully completed the two-week Voyage Management System (VMS) (V 9.4) Operator course at Surface Warfare Schools Command (SWSC) Site Pearl Harbor, Sept. 4.
Lt. j.g. Hannah Denny will soon serve aboard the Independence-class littoral combat ship USS Tulsa (LCS 16) as the weapons officer and a prospective officer of the deck (OOD).
“This Voyage Management System [Operator] course has taught me how to properly navigate the system,” said Denny. “I feel well prepared to contribute to my ship’s mission from day one .”
Used aboard naval vessels, the VMS is an electronic chart display and information system that enables surface combatants to stay in control, pinpoint locations, attain directions, and overall safely navigate our Navy’s ships at sea.
“The safe navigation of a ship plays a vital role in our Navy’s ability to maintain surface warfare readiness in all areas of responsibility around the globe ,” said Quartermaster 1st Class Stephen Chestnut, the leading instructor of the VMS Operator course at Surface Warfare Schools Command. “My team ensures each graduate is provided extensive and effective knowledge within a two-week period. Their ability to thoroughly understand the operation of this vital system is critical for the safe navigation of their ship.”
Denny is a 2013 graduate of Ridley Park High School and she obtained her commission through the ROTC program at Old Dominion University in 2017.
“The Navy spirit was in my blood from a very young age,” said Denny. “My grandfather was a veteran and served his country first as a deck seaman working hard preserving the ship and conducting dangerous exercises to keep the ship supplied while underway. He then excelled in the quartermaster rating to be one of the ship’s elite navigators.”
Denny will soon become an OOD aboard Tulsa homeported at Naval Base San Diego. An OOD is a watchstanding position in a ship’s crew who is the direct representative of the ship’s commanding officer and is responsible for the ship.
Denny is the daughter Erin Denny, who resides in Ridley Park.
Making up a significant portion of all officers in the Navy, SWOs are found all over the world, aboard every surface combatant in the U.S. Navy. From navigation and shiphandling, to maritime warfare and naval engineering, whether at war or during peace, they regularly deploy across the globe to protect the nation’s interests, promote freedom of trade, and perform humanitarian assistance.
SWSC’s mission is to ready sea bound Sailors to serve on surface combatants as officers, enlisted engineers, and enlisted navigation professionals to fulfill the Navy’s mission to maintain global maritime superiority.
