Marine Wing Support Squadron 373, Marine Aircraft Group 11, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, is supporting the Great Basin Coordination Center to assist aircraft combating the Slink Fire in Coleville, California.

The fire was initially reported on Aug. 29, 2020, in the area of Slinkard Valley southwest of Topaz Lake. The fire currently spans an area of 21,755 acres and is 36 percent contained. The cause of the fire has been attributed to lightning strikes in the area.

"MWSS-373 is committed to being a good neighbor to the San Diego community that we call home,” said Lt. Col. Kurt Boyd, the commanding officer for MWSS-373. “This is an opportunity for us to assist with California fire suppression, and remain ready and responsive to emerging requirements of our surrounding population.”

MWSS-373, as well as Marine Corps Mountain Warfare Training Center, is integrated with multiple firefighting agencies from across several states to battle the fire and mitigate damage to the training areas that are essential to Marine Corps service level training.

3rd MAW continues to “Fix, Fly and Fight” as the Marine Corps’ largest aircraft wing, and remains combat ready, deployable on short notice, and lethal when called into action.
