NEWPORT, R.I. — Robert Murphy, who recently retired as the test and evaluation lead of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport’s Undersea Warfare Weapons, Vehicles, and Defensive Systems Department, received the Department of the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award during a ceremony with leadership on Aug. 18.
The award, the second highest honorary civilian award bestowed by the Navy, was presented to Murphy by Commanding Officer Capt. Chad Hennings and Technical Director Ron Vien for his outstanding leadership, technical expertise and dedication during his 36-year career at Division Newport. Murphy’s wife Lisa attended the ceremony.
Murphy, a resident of Portsmouth, Rhode Island, who started at Division Newport in 1983 and retired in January, led a team in the coordination, planning and execution of in-water torpedo firings for heavyweight and lightweight torpedo systems. He led five successful Ice Exercise events over a 28-year period and played a key role in increasing the capability and lethality of today’s weapon systems.
Murphy’s citation reads:
“Throughout his career, Mr. Murphy has consistently provided outstanding leadership and has enabled the U.S. Navy to quickly and consistently deliver critical capabilities to the warfighter. Recently, his contribution to the early fielding of the Mark 48 Advanced Processor Build 5 torpedo system in 2019 helped to significantly increase capability and lethality. He leveraged fleet exercises and training events to decrease the number of operational test firings by 30%, for a savings of more than $3 million. The Mark 48 Mod 7 Advanced Processor Build 5 torpedo system was fielded almost a full year ahead of schedule. His tireless work ethic and total commitment to the torpedo enterprise has been of substantial benefit to the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport, the U.S. Navy and the nation. He is most deserving of the Department of the Navy Superior Civilian Service Award.”
NUWC Division Newport is a shore command of the U.S. Navy within the Naval Sea Systems Command, which engineers, builds and supports America’s fleet of ships and combat systems. NUWC Newport provides research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, undersea offensive and defensive weapons systems, and countermeasures associated with undersea warfare.
NUWC Newport is the oldest warfare center in the country, tracing its heritage to the Naval Torpedo Station established on Goat Island in Newport Harbor in 1869. Commanded by Capt. Chad Hennings, NUWC Newport maintains major detachments in West Palm Beach, Florida, and Andros Island in the Bahamas, as well as test facilities at Seneca Lake and Fisher's Island, New York, Leesburg, Florida, and Dodge Pond, Connecticut.
