“As an Aircraft Fuel Systems specialist, my responsibilities are to maintain and repair aircraft fuel systems,” said Bogalhas. “We also maintain fuel tanks and fuel cells to pumps and things of that nature.”

Air Force aircraft fuel systems specialists are responsible for ensuring that all fuel systems on an aircraft are in working order. These airmen diagnose fuel system and component malfunctions and recommend any necessary corrective actions to resolve problems.

Bogalhas shared that since returning from technical training he has spent the majority of his time learning through on the job training. Technical training consists of a basic aircraft fuel systems maintenance course and an advanced aircraft fuel systems course and takes place at Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas.

“I chose this career field because it is unlike other positions,” said Bogalhas. “A lot of other jobs seem to specialize in one specific thing, whereas fuel systems do a lot of hands on work from diagnosing malfunctions to repairing. We do a little bit of everything. We have our confined space aspect where we enter fuel cells to work.”

The majority of the work revolves around performing repairs and maintenance on aircraft fuel tanks and cells. The work often takes place in confined spaces inside of the aircraft. It may involve repairing and replacing any malfunctioning components, and preparing any sealants or adhesives needed.

Bogalhas wants to use his Massachusetts tuition and fee waiver to advance his education and attend college. The Massachusetts tuition and fee waiver provides Massachusetts Air National Guard members 100% tuition coverage for any state public college.

“I am planning on attending the University of Massachusetts Amherst and receiving my bachelor’s degree from there,” said Bogalhas. “I want to improve in my career field and advance my skills. In the distant future I would possibly want to commission as an officer.”

Bogalhas is optimistic about his future at Barnes and is confident that his job now is a good starting point towards achieving his goals.
