NAVFAC Washington celebrated the completion of the construction of structural steel at the new Executive Airlift Hangar Complex project at Joint Base Andrews Aug. 5.

“I am humbled by the work all of you have done throughout the course of construction to get to where we are right now,” said Capt. Greg Vinci, NAVFAC Washington commanding officer. “In my 27-year naval career, I have never seen a project that has garnered this much attention and has progressed so well.”

The Executive Airlift Hangar Complex project is at the forefront of the NAVFAC MILCON program. The project consists of a hangar complex, aircraft taxiway and parking apron that will house the new executive aircraft. More than 366,300 total man hours of work has brought the project to this point.

“I truly appreciate the hard work you have each dedicated to this project,” said Capt. Vinci. “Over 70,000 man hours dedicated to just steel erection, including these 24 incredible 280-foot-tall trusses and over 70 80-foot-tall steel columns, I am honored to have the opportunity to be with all of you to celebrate the effort so far.”

The mitigation of construction delays, due to the COVID-19 pandemic by both NAVFAC and Clark Construction, have to date been a success. Adhering to CDC guidance, the cleaning of workspaces increased and social distancing has been achieved through the implementation of remote work technology and staggered work shifts. Personal protection equipment to stop the spread of the virus, such as masks and gloves, are required in workspaces. There has been no evidence of spread of the virus from worker to worker on-site and there have been zero reported safety incidents. NAVFAC and Clark Construction’s culture of health and safety has ensured that the Executive Airlift Hangar Complex project site is one of the safest in America.

Clark Construction was awarded the construction contract in late 2018.
