FORT CARSON, Colo. - A U.S. Army Satellite Operations Brigade space warrior receives an Army Commendation Medal for his heroic efforts assisting medical personnel at the scene of an accident in July.

July 23, Sgt. David Rosales of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 53rd Signal Battalion, witnessed a semi-truck collide head-on with a small passenger car carrying a couple and two children.

“It all happened right in front of me,” said Rosales. “It was a crazy moment, and I was one of the first people on the scene. It was just instinct, and they needed help, so I went to work.”

The female in the driver seat had a fractured skull and broken legs. Using his combat-life-saver skills he acquired through training in the Army, Rosales and an off-duty firefighter assisted emergency medical technicians and paramedics in cutting out the woman’s seat from the car and doing an ABCCS (airway, breathing, circulation, consciousness, safety) assessment on one of the children before medical personnel arrived.

Rosales received the award from Col. Stephen Parrish, brigade commander, Aug. 7.

“It’s really great to see Soldiers doing great things in the community and going out of their way to help somebody,” Parrish said. “It makes me feel proud, and I know it sends a message to the community about what the Army stands for.”
