Terrence Larimer, Joint Base Charleston's natural resource manager assigned to the 628th Civil Engineer Squadron, answered some questions about the upcoming Hunter Safety Education Classes being held at JB Charleston.
Larimer explained what the natural resource office is responsible for.
“The natural resource office is in charge of making sure that the natural resources on the base are managed and taken care of in a way that facilitates the military mission,” he said. “We insure that all of the pertinent state and federal natural resource laws are followed so that we don't have any hold ups in the mission activity because of problems with natural resources. The major things that we are charged with taking care if are things like endangered species management, timber management and outdoor recreation”
What does the Hunter Safety Education Class teach?
“The class teaches firearm safety and handling, hunter ethics and responsibility, game management, game management concepts, tree stand safety, all-terrain vehicle safety, how to use primitive weapons safely, how to use bows and arrows safely, and how to handle game once it's been harvested.”
Who can attend the class and is it free?
“The class is free and open to the public but students 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult.”
When is the class?
“Classes are being held August 8th, September 19th and October 24th at the JB Charleston's Weapon Stations Military Family Readiness Center, 1005 Jefferson Ave, building 755 from 8 a.m. to in between 2:30 and 3:30 p.m.”
Why should someone attend?
‘We have an extensive hunting and fishing program with a lot of opportunities to do so on base but we require all hunters to have taken a hunter safety education class. Also, South Carolina law requires hunting license holders born after June 30, 1979 to complete a state sponsored hunting safety education course. Hunting is an activity that needs to be approached responsibly and seriously. You are using firearms, climbing trees and tree stands and using ATVs. All of those things need to be handled responsibly because if they are not, people can be injured or even die. It's not something to be approached casually or lightly and you really should take a hunters education class before you go out there and start hunting. Even experienced hunters can take these classes and get something out of them.’

To pre-register and for more information call the JB Charleston natural resource office at (843)-794-7951 You also need to pre-register online on the South Carolina department of natural resources website.
Are there hunting opportunities on the base?
Yes. We hunt white tail deer, waterfowl, small game which is mostly squirrels, wild hogs and wild turkey. Hunting season will open on the base on August 15th. Our seasons run concurrent with the state's seasons and we operate under all state laws with additional joint base policies and procedures. We believe this is the safest, most convenient and one of the best places to hunt in the low country. We incline any of our Active Duty and their dependents to come enjoy it with us.
