    4th Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade

FORT CARSON, Colorado –People all over the world get excited when they hear their favorite book will become a movie or when their favorite athlete re-signs with the team. However, most people don’t know about all the individuals that played a part in getting the job done.
The same can be said about every successful mission the 4th Infantry Division and tenant units on Fort Carson performs. Before those units can conduct missions, the Soldiers from the Petroleum Quality Analysis System: Enhanced (PQAS-E) must conduct their test. The team is mostly comprised of Soldiers from 247th Composite Supply Company, 68th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 4th Sustainment Brigade, 4th Inf. Div. along with a support from the rest of the division.
“Our main mission is to support the 4th Infantry Division with its petroleum products quality assurance,” said Sgt. Meghan Middlesworth, petroleum technician, 247th CSC, 68th CSSB, 4SB, 4th Inf. Div. “Our main function is to provide filter effectiveness test, product identification and product deterioration testing. Currently the 247th CSC’s Fuels Lab is the only operational lab on Fort Carson, which means all petroleum testing from every unit on the installation is performed by our lab.”

The hard work and dedication of the fuel lab team has been recognized by the U.S. Army Petroleum Center. The fuel lab has recently won the U.S. Army Award for Petroleum Excellence.

“This crew has been performing outstanding work and to see them get recognized is incredible,” said Capt. Mathew Garrett, company commander, 247th CSC, 68th CSSB, 4SB, 4th Inf. Div. “We’ve been working these Soldiers extremely hard and they continue to roll up their sleeves and get the job done. I’m extremely excited for them and they deserve all the credit.”

The petroleum lab personnel recently re-deployed in support of operation Inherent Resolve.

“The lab spent the first four months of 2019 and a total of 9 months supporting the Iraq and Afghanistan Area of Operations,” Chief Warrant Officer 2 Jorge Ramirez, petroleum systems technician, 247th CSC, 68th CSSB, 4SB, 4th Inf. Div. “They operated the only petroleum lab in Iraq. They processed all petroleum testing in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as fuel samples from Saudi Arabia. In total, they processed more than 1,150 fuel samples ensuring more than 60 fuel dispensing units in the area of operations were within Army standards.”

This is the second year in a row that the fuel lab team has won an award for petroleum excellence.

“I knew that we were going to win this award, because these Soldiers are simply the best,” Ramirez said. “I can’t take credit for what they do. They are very proficient at what they do. It’s a great honor for me to be included in this group.”
