As Independence Day again approaches, a Marine recruiter in the Birmingham area reflects on past service in support of the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit during the 4th of July in 2017.

Prior to arriving at Recruiting Substation Birmingham in 2019, Staff Sgt. Justin Hoffman served as an avionics technician for the 13th MEU, which conducted security and stability operations on ship throughout the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

During the deployment, which included operations in Qatar, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Dubai, and Bahrain, Hoffman earned the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal for his aviation support.

“Being on deployment allowed me the opportunity to be exposed to the difficult living conditions that are all over the world,” Hoffman said. “I have also witnessed some of the basic freedoms that other countries do not have.”

During his Marine Corps career, Hoffman has also earned certification as a quality assurance representative, high power instructor and collateral duty inspector supervisor.

Hoffman shares his experiences with young men and women in the Birmingham area to show them how the Marine Corps can give them the opportunity to serve and grow both personally and professionally.

“I had no prior work experience before joining the Marine Corps, and it has really opened up potential jobs that are not just limited to the aviation community,” said Hoffman. “As an avionics technician for the Marine Corps, this affords me the opportunity to have a job skill that is highly desired once I transition out.”

Hoffman said he seeks out the most highly qualified young men and women to carry on the Marine Corps legacy.

“While recruiting the next generation of Marines, I look for a drive that will allow them to succeed through any challenge,” Hoffman said. “This drive will allow the Marine Corps to continue its success as we face challenges every day.”

Hoffman is one of 45 canvassing recruiters in Recruiting Station Montgomery, which covers the entire state of Alabama, Eastern Mississippi and the Florida Panhandle.

The Mission of RS Montgomery is to find the most highly qualified young men and women and help them embark on a journey to become Marines. The Marine Corps seeks to transform these young men and women into ethical warriors who win the nation’s battles and return to their communities as better citizens.

During the past year, RS Montgomery has shipped 4,858 men and women to recruit training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island, S.C.
