Marines with Delta Company, Infantry Training Battalion, School of Infantry - West, nearing their final weeks of training, conducted a live-fire buddy rush training evolution to work on their communication skills at Range 215A on Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton, California, May 21.

The Marines were learning the responsibilities and skills of the 0311 MOS, which includes knowing how to effectively move toward a target and begin to engage the enemy. This training also improves their communication with each other when they are on the battlefield or in a static environment.

“Like anything in the Marine Corps, we took a building blocks approach this week,” said Capt. Daniel Rogers, the company commander for Delta Co. “We started off with two Marines at a time.”

The first step of the training involved two Marines rushing and attacking a target. As the week progressed, the Marines added fire team attacks and then worked in the use of grenades.

The students start moving as a fire team toward an objective. Once they reach a certain distance from the objective, the simulated enemy presents itself giving the Marines positive identification of their target. At this point the Marines engage the target with their initial suppression fire.

“Biggest challenge I’ve seen throughout the runs in general is the communication between them,” said Staff Sgt. Jose Robles, a combat instructor with Delta Co. “You have to be able to communicate with your team.”

For the majority of the course, the students have been focused on individual skills, according to Rogers. Now they need to be able to communicate as a team. To know what is happening with their fire team, Marines must be able to effectively communicate between one another. This range is where they are taught and master these skills, before they are sent to their units in the Fleet Marine Force.

The Marines of Delta Co. are coming up on the last few weeks of their training cycle. Using the building block learning method, these Marines will leave ITB with the basic fundamentals of infantry riflemen. This will allow their gaining units to keep developing them as masters of their trade.

Delta Co. is scheduled to graduate June 11.
