One of the busiest aerial ports in the Middle East, known as Cargo City, celebrated its one year anniversary as the interim-gateway for military operations for joint and coalition partners May 19, 2020.

“Cargo City is here today because of the dedication, hard work and determination of US and Kuwaiti military forces working together to build this hub.” said Col. Rod Simpson, 386th Air Expeditionary Wing commander. “Together, we have managed to bring the vision of those who came before us into reality.”

Cargo City was stood up alongside Kuwait International Airport in order to allow for the development of the new Mubarak Military Base, a joint vision between Kuwait Air Force and U.S. Air Force senior leaders.

“Over the past year, Cargo City has been critical to supporting passenger and cargo movements across the area of responsibility,” said Col. Gage Handy, 387th Air Expeditionary Group commander. “Although it was designed and built as a temporary solution, it’s part of a much larger vision to fully integrate Kuwaiti and U.S. capability.”

The 387th AEG, which falls under the 386th AEW at ASAB, provides base operations and support for United States Central Command's Theater Logistics Gateway and largest aerial port of debarkation.

Due to its location, Cargo City was designed to provide optimized capabilities and streamline the mission while sustaining a major military logistics point.

“The 386th AEW team faces many challenges at each of our locations, and the ever changing environment ensures there will be more challenges tomorrow,” Simpson said. “Our ability to maintain a critical theater gateway for cargo and passenger movements drives us to work toward longer term, more permanent infrastructure. Doing so alongside our joint, coalition, and Kuwaiti partners further improves our ability to do what we do best, deliver decisive combat power to the warfighter while building partnerships.”

The opening of Cargo City successfully closed the U.S. Air Force and Coalition Abdullah Al-Mubarak Air Base gateway after over 20 years of operations.
