BATTLE CREEK, Mich. – U.S. Army Staff Sgt. William McLin III, a native of Detroit, Michigan, is serving in Battle Creek as part of the Department of Defense’s response to COVID-19, which is being led by U.S. Northern Command.

McLin is a unit supply specialist with the 177th Regional Training Institute based in Fort Custer. During the COVID-19 pandemic, he tracks the supply needs for medical centers under U.S. Army North’s Task Force Center. Task Force Center is the division-level headquarters responsible for the command and control of the active duty Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines supporting the COVID-19 response mission through 15 states in the central United States.

“Protecting the American people, preventing the spread of COVID-19, and killing the virus is our main mission,” said Maj. Gen. Michael Stone, Commanding General, Task Force Center. “The Task Force brings the Department of Defense’s highly-trained professionals and experts to support the civilian authorities throughout our regions.”

“It’s important that we keep current information on product and material needs to ensure a successful effort against COVID-19,” said McLin.

McLin, an 11-year Army National Guard veteran, was a graduate of duPont Manual High School in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1982. He went on to attend Marygrove College and Alabama A&M, where he graduated in 1989 and 2000, respectively, and he earned two master’s degrees in English and Administration.

He graduated U.S. Army Basic Combat Training at Fort Sill, Oklahoma in 2007 and has since attended the Army’s Basic Leadership Course, Advanced Leadership Course, human resources academy and unit supply specialist academy. His career has included a deployment in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from 2009-2011, and his awards include the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, Army Achievement Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Non-Commissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Service Ribbon, Army Overseas Service Ribbon, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, and the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal. He is currently employed by the Detroit Board of Education, Wayne State University, and Oakland Community College as an educator, tutor and facilitator in Detroit.
