Camp Shelby, Miss. — As communities across the state are adhering to the stay-at-home order, Soldiers from the Camp Shelby Installation Support Unit conducted drill from their homes April 4-5, supporting Gov. Tate Reeves stay-at-home order which is in effect from April 3 thru April 20.

As leaders, our top priority is and always will be the safety of our citizens,” Reeves said in a press conference announcing the order.

While many people throughout the state face financial and personal hardships, the Camp Shelby Installation Support Unit is ensuring Soldiers remain connected during this time of social distancing.

Col. Bobby M. Ginn, Camp Shelby post commander said, “In conjunction with guidance from our State HQs and the Mississippi Department of Health, our command team made the decision to let our Soldiers make their weekend drill from home.”

“This provided a twofold benefit; One, it allowed us to help prevent the spread of COVID 19, by not having large numbers of personnel in formations, classrooms, etc.” Said Ginn. It also allowed Soldiers much needed time to take online educational and professional development courses."

The majority of annual online training requirements use Common Access Card (CAC) enabled websites. As long as a Soldier has a CAC reader, they’re able to log into those sites and conduct their required annual online training from the comfort of their own home.

Working from home can present challenges, 1st Sgt. Steven Davis, Camp Shelby Installation Support Unit said, “accountability and the call-ins are the major challenges, that being said all time hacks were met and we were able to get in touch with our unit members.”

Online training was not the only requirement, section sergeants were able to exercise the units alert roster, this allowed the command team to identify which Soldiers needed to update their contact information.

Camp Shelby remains committed to the health and safety of our men and women in uniform, their families, and the communities in which we serve.
