Aircrew at Sumpter Smith Joint National Guard Base are exercising increased health precautions as part of the escalation to Health Protection Condition Bravo. HPCON-B is implemented when there exists an outbreak or heightened risk of exposure.
The screening is performed to mitigate the risk of contracting or spreading COVID-19. Pilots, boom operators and crew chiefs spend long hours in close proximity, so screenings are an important aspect of the flight preparation process.
Other ways to reduce infection risk involve social distancing. Telework is performed where possible, and in-person meetings and assemblies are cancelled until further notice.
The contagion spreads via respiratory droplets, produced when coughing or sneezing. As such, hygienic precautions play a big factor. Airmen are encouraged to wash or sanitize their hands regularly and avoid unnecessary physical contact.
The air refueling mission continues by implementing these measures and more into everyday life. The ability to “adapt and overcome” is on full display as airmen continue to accomplish the mission under changing conditions.
