HOHENFELS, Germany – The warmth of spring is quickly approaching, and some may feel the season for giving is over. However, for those who deal in blood- the season for giving is just beginning. On March 3, 2020 the Hohenfels Community Activity Center played host to the Inaugural Capt. Eric Anderson Blood Drive. About a year ago this time Capt. Anderson, the Hohenfels Clinic Executive Officer, went to the Community Activity Center to provide a donation, after the pre-screening he was advised to go and get a few tests done at the clinic.

The ending results of his test stated that he had leukemia, but the silver lining is that he caught it early on enough to fight and overcome this trial in his life.

“In trying to save other lives he ended up saving his own,” said Stacy Sanning, the blood donor recruiter and public affairs officer for the Armed Services Blood Program.

Sanning has been with Armed Services Blood Program as the donor recruiter for two years. She along with the Armed Services Blood Program travel multiple locations blood drives every month. Visiting the neighboring military bases such as Wiesbaden, Kaiserslautern and Spangdahlem sometimes three times a week. Sanning has no trouble making these events happen.

“It’s a very fulfilling job, the harder I work the more blood donors we get in and the more lives we potentially save with in our own military community,” said Sanning.

The Hohenfels community came out in full effect to do their part. Amidst the KFOR 27 exercise service members came out to show support and give a donation that means more than they know and reach someone they may never meet.

“I think it's really important to be able come to a community like here Hohenfels where the military family is so supportive of what we do we are the DOD's blood program," said Sanning. "We collect from military and their families and all the blood that we collect from them is going right back to them and we’re sending this blood out to military hospitals throughout Europe and the military medical facilities downrange."

Members of the Hohenfels community proved that donating is something that shouldn’t be taken lightly because not everyone can do it. Capt. Anderson showed that in trying to save other peoples lives he saved his own.
