PORTSMOUTH, Va. (Mar. 3, 2020) Naval Medical Center Portsmouth (NMCP) staff members celebrate the 149th Navy Medical Corps birthday on Mar. 3. As the Navy Medical Corps celebrates its 149th birthday, active duty and reserve physicians who comprise the Navy Medical Corps demonstrate an exceptional commitment to those who have pledged their lives to defend their country.

Cmdr. L.J Kuskowski, chair of NMCP's Medical Executive Committee (MEC), read the birthday letter from Rear Adm. James Hancock, Chief Navy Medical Corps.

“It is my honor to represent you, the nearly 4,300 physicians on active duty and in the reserves on the occasion of our 149th birthday,” Kuskowski read. “Let us continue to reflect on our respected Corps, and our noble profession that has served the Navy, Marine Corps, and Joint Commands around the globe for 149 years.”

The Navy Medical Corps ensures the health and wellbeing of the fighting force. The practice of force health protection not only ensures the health of every active duty service member, it is also a commitment to maintain the health and wellbeing of our military families.

As the U. S. Navy's oldest, continuously-operating military hospital since 1830, Naval Medical Center Portsmouth proudly serves past and present military members and their families. The nationally acclaimed, state of the art medical center, including its ten branch health and TRICARE Prime clinics, serves the Hampton Roads area, and additionally offers premier research and teaching programs designed to prepare new doctors, nurses and hospital corpsmen for future roles in healing and wellness.
