Story by Mass Communication Specialist 1st Class John P. Curtis, Navy Recruiting District Phoenix Public Affairs.

ALBUQUERQUE, N. M. - In the city known as the hot air ballooning capital of the world, Retail Services Specialist 2nd Class Orlando Sanabria works as a recruiter for Navy Recruiting District (NRD) Phoenix. His days aren’t filled sailing over the sky, but working with young adults who may see sailing on the water in their future. His goal is to use his position to help better their futures through a career in the Navy.

Sanabria was born in Queens, New York, and he grew up in Orlando, Florida. While Sanabria is a citizen, his parents were Columbian and deported when he was 15. After the loss, Sanabria lived with his uncle and he was driven by his goal of getting his parents back in the Unites States.

“Growing up, I thought I had it made,” said Sanabria. “Then I lost the two greatest people in my life. I barely made it through school and life until I remembered that my dad wanted me to help them get back (to the U. S.).”

After getting guidance and learning from a cousin, who was already serving, what the Navy offered, Sanabria joined the Navy to better himself and with hope that his service would help his parents come back to the United States.

“While serving in the Navy, I grew stronger and excelled in everything that the Navy put in front of me,” said Sanabria.

After nine years in the Navy, Sanabria’s parents returned to the U. S. He said his service was a significant factor for his parents receiving visas.
“It was the best feeling,” said Sanabria, while talking about how it felt to have his parents return.

After seeing the impact the Navy had in his life, Sanabria chose to become a recruiter to help those people who have their own goals they are striving to meet.

“The Navy gave me a direction and provided me with a lifestyle I am able to give to my family. That may have never happened otherwise,” said Sanabria.

He doesn’t just want to help those around him, though, and after building his own family up, he has turned his efforts toward lifting the citizens of Albuquerque into a brighter future.

“I always wanted to change the lives of young men and women that want to pursue something greater, and that’s why I’ve always wanted to be a recruiter.”

The rewarding parts of recruiting for Sanabria have not just been the decorations and accolades from the chain of command. Instead, it’s the daily interactions with the applicants and people around him, and it’s the lives he is able to redirect for the better.

“The parents (of future Sailors) come up thank me for saving their children’s life. That’s been the most rewarding thing for me.”

He is finishing his tour as a recruiter and what he calls “shaping the fleet.” He will transfer to the USS Iwo Jima (LHD-7). His previous assignments were on USS Stethem (DDG-63) and USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70).

Sanabria may not spend his days in hot air balloons, but his ability to see the bigger picture has always been one of his best qualities. Now he’s using that information to help others see that they too have thee the ability to make a difference.

Navy Recruiting Command consists of a command headquarters, two Navy Recruiting Regions, 15 Navy Recruiting Districts and 11 Navy Talent Acquisition Groups that serve more than 815 recruiting stations across the world. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America’s Navy.
