GREAT LAKES, Ill. (Feb. 27, 2020) – Naval Station Great Lakes announced their Civilians of the Year in an awards ceremony February 7, 2020.
Lieutenant William Mix, from Darien, Illinois, was named Non-supervisor Civilian of the Year for Great Lakes. Mix works for the Great Lakes Fire Department.
“It is an honor to have been selected,” said Mix. “I was quite shocked when it was announced”
Mix has been working for the fire department for 11 years. He is responsible for the department’s apparatus maintenance program, Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA) program, and the department’s small engine equipment program. He also manages the departments’ day-to-day operation of the 100 foot tower ladder.
Mix has been a firefighter for 16 years and a federal employee for 20 years. He also served with the Air Force working in avionics maintenance.
