    Nimitz Wins 2020 Ney Award

    BREMERTON, WA, UNITED STATES

Story by Petty Officer 3rd Class Anthony Collier

The aircraft carrier USS Nimitz (CVN 68) was awarded the 2020 Captain Edward F. Ney Memorial Food Service Award for best aircraft carrier galley, Feb. 21.

Established in 1958, the Captain Edward F. Ney Award for food service excellence is given annually to Navy galleys of each category of ship and shore commands. The objective is to improve the quality of life for Navy personnel and recognize the best general galleys in the Navy.

“Our food service division definitely earned this award,” said Capt. Max Clark, Nimitz’ commanding officer. “Throughout my time here not only have they cooked some amazing food but they’ve personified the ship’s motto, “Teamwork, a tradition,” with their hard work and dedication to their craft.”

Nimitz underwent a thorough inspection of their food service division, which evaluated the criteria for the award, including: cleanliness, food quality, organization, inventory, galley presentation and culinary specialist job efficiency.

“This award is validation of, and a true testament to, all of the Sailors’ hard work and dedication,” said Cmdr. Tim Freeman, Nimitz’ supply officer. “Recognition as the best food service in the fleet is difficult to do because of the level of competition, but our Sailors earned the honor by demonstrating their skill and passion every day.”

The International Food Service Executive Association co-sponsors the Ney Memorial Awards Program, which is meant to incentivize excellent food service within the Navy, increasing morale and well-being for all in the fleet.

“I’m really proud that we won this award,” said Culinary Specialist Seaman Akia Dunlap, from Columbia, South Carolina. “It makes me happy knowing that our service to the crew is the best in the fleet.”

Supply department Sailors aboard Nimitz don’t intend to slow down after being recognized. They plan to use this award to set a standard of excellence in the ship’s food service for years to come.

“As we move forward on to more difficult operations, it is important we keep the momentum going and continue our five star level of food service which will serve as the foundation for the success and morale of our Nimitz team,” said Freeman.

Nimitz is in port preparing for future operations.
