    Commander, Navy Recruiting Command

SAN ANTONIO – (Feb. 20, 2020) To oversee mission accomplishment and the welfare of the Sailors under his command, Capt. Anthony Bayungan, of San Diego, commodore of Navy Recruiting Region West, Navy Recruiting Command (NRC), joined by Command Master Chief Gerard Gaddist and Master Chief Navy Counselor Heather Charara, Region West’s chief recruiter, visited with Sailors of Navy Recruiting District (NRD) San Antonio.

Bayungan, who assumed command in January, traveled to South Texas to visit recruiting stations, conduct training, and speak with high school and college students regarding opportunities in America’s Navy.

“We were invited to travel to NRD San Antonio to provide training and conduct boards,” said Bayungan. “We also wanted to see how the NRD operates and what makes them successful.”

According to Bayungan, it’s important for Region West leadership to meet face-to-face with recruiters operating in the field.

“I want to hear from our recruiters,” said Bayungan. “I want to hear about their successes to include the bad, and to learn what Region West and NRC can do to make their jobs easier and assist them in accomplishing their mission.”

During the visit, Bayungan had the opportunity to tour the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo, speak to Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) students of Smithson Valley High School in Spring Branch and attended a career fair held at Texas State University in San Marcos.

“I think it is important for senior leadership to utilize our positions to assist recruiters with gaining access to schools,” said Bayungan. “I go to high schools to help increase the value of the relationship between the school and the recruiter.”

According to Bayungan, when senior executives speaks with students, it communicates a message that America’s Navy cares. Additionally, it communicates to the leadership of the high school and university that senior officers understand the importance of their students.

Bayungan ended his trip to NRD San Antonio by spending time with the Chiefs Mess at Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 10427 in Leander.

The leadership of Region West briefed on a number of subjects to include but not limited to recruiting philosophy, leadership principals, professional development, and mentorship of junior Sailors.

“At this point of time, NRD San Antonio is one of the best recruiting districts in the country,” said Bayungan. “With the current leadership in place and incoming leadership in the fall, I see no reason why NRD San Antonio shouldn’t sustain its high performance.”

NRD San Antonio’s area of responsibility includes more than 34 Navy Recruiting Stations and Navy Officer Recruiting Stations spread throughout 144,000 square miles of Central and South Texas territory.
