SAN DIEGO – Commander, Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet (CNSP) and Expeditionary Strike Group THREE (ESG 3) hosted the Shore Power 2020 brief with the help of Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) electricians at the Naval Base San Diego Theater Feb. 18.

While ships are pierside, shore-power cables can be connected to provide the ships electrical power when their main and auxiliary engines are shut down. The many risks of handing these ship-to-shore connection cables, as well as frequent updates to the maintenance on them, led to the establishment of annual training and assessments to support shipboard personnel.

“Shore power is the delivery of pierside electrical power to 14 amphibious warships comprised of more than 14,000 active-duty Sailors,” said Capt. Robert Bailey, assistant chief of staff for logistics and readiness for ESG 3. “We want to get everyone familiarized with the proper way to connect and disconnect with torque values and proper procedural compliance. Shore power training will make our Navy a safer and more combat-effective force that places the safety, readiness, and training of our people as our number one priority.”

The presenters explained the importance of the preventative safety actions and the adherence to the correct procedures in handling shore power connection cables.

“The on-going shore power training is showing positive returns,” said Jerry Brugger, Maintenance and Materials Management (3M) program assessments branch head for CNSP. “The positive returns are evidenced by the increased knowledge and lack of accidents/incidents dealing with shore-power.”

Technical experts from NAVFAC and CNSP used videos, lectures and demonstrations to emphasize the importance of effective engineering leadership for electrical division personnel involved in shore power evolutions and provide electronic footage of the brief to every appropriate unit in the Pacific Fleet area of responsibility.
