BOSTON (Feb 17, 2020) - Personnel Specialist 2nd Class Donyea Holloway attached to Navy Recruiting Station Quincy is the Navy Recruiting District New England Sailor of the week.

A Boston native and graduate of Stoughton High School, Holloway joined the Navy in 2014 to fund higher education goals after her sister was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Between healthcare costs and Holloway already one of five siblings, she saw the Navy as a path to support herself without incurring debt.

The Personnel Specialist rating emerged as a career path to fit her needs though the rate was not a factor in boot camp. She graduated number one of 802 Sailors during her Recruit Training Command pass-in-review.

"When my name is behind something, I make sure it really shines," said Holloway.

At NRD New England, she is starting the fiscal year strong earning the Junior Sailor of the Quarter, first quarter 2020. She credits the teamwork of her division and family for keeping her focused.

"Feeling uncertain you are doing the best at your job, then being selected for this, is a great reward," said Holloway. "I want to see all of us succeed at the same time, and I know if I give up, that means I am not pulling my weight. Plus, I want to make my family proud at the same time."

Holloway served aboard USS Carl Vision (CVN 70) before checking into NRD New England on Dec 8, 2018. She feels the combined experience has provided her tools for success in any environment.

"Even in difficult jobs, I still put my full effort forward and make sure I get through it," said Holloway.

She said the opportunities the Navy has given her have been a great reward.

"It has opened a lot of avenues and doors for me," said Holloway. "I was able to get books and an education for free; I lived in San Diego for four years; I've been to Australia and a lot of places that I didn't think I was going to go, and I went sky diving in Hawaii. I would not have done that without the Navy."

When she is not recruiting, Holloway continues to support others by volunteering at the Grace Church, Dana-Faber Cancer Institute, and the Jimmy Fund.

"I participate in all their walks and the Boston Marathon for Dana Faber, said Holloway, It's a rewarding experience."

Word of advice she would give for motivation.

"Keep going. It will be worth it in the end," said Holloway. "I say it every day."

NRD New England covers over 93,500 square miles encompassing the states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, and the Eastern half of New York. Headquartered in Boston, it also maintains two stations overseas at Kaiserslautern, Germany, and Naples, Italy, covering the entire territory of Europe, Southwest Asia, and the Middle East. Their combined goal is to attract the highest quality candidates to assure the ongoing success of America's Navy.
