    GOING THE DISTANCE
    SENIOR AIRMAN CYDNIE WILLIAMS
    FEB. 13 2020

CHARLESTON AIR FORCE BASE, SC- Megan Daum once said “Distance is not for the fearful, it’s for the bold. It’s for those who are willing to spend a lot of time alone in exchange for a little time with the one they love. It’s for those who know a good thing when they see it, even if they don’t see it nearly enough.”

Relationships are hard. Long distance relationships are even harder. Still nothing can quite compare to the challenges that a relationship between two service members has to overcome. Deployments, changing duty stations, long and unpredictable work hours. It almost seems impossible.

It’s an uphill battle that no one can ever truly be prepared for. “He was willing to drive for eight hours just to spend one day with me.” said Staff Sgt. Tiunna Hughes. He always put us as his first priority, that’s how I knew he was the one.”

While stationed at MacDill Air Force Base SSgt Hughes was selected for a temporary duty(TDY) to Exercise Mobility Guardian, an exercise in Washington D.C., where she met SSgt. Dennis Allen, who was stationed at Charleston Air Force Base, S.C. The two instantly connected and decided to continue their relationship, even after the exercise ended.

After almost a year together Hughes decided it was time for a change. “I had been at MacDill for about four years and I was ready to move.” Sgt Hughes continued. “I checked the Assignment Management System(AMS) for different assignments and there happened to be one in Charleston.” She applied. Within weeks she was notified that she had been selected.

Shortly after she was notified, Sgt Allen received news of his own. He was being sent to Osan Air Base in Korea. By the time Sgt Hughes arrived in Charleston he only had a few months left. They decided to make the best of what little time they had together.

At his going away he made a speech and thanked her for always being there, by the end he got on one knee and asked her if she was willing to spend forever. She was.

The two married shortly after. “We constantly FaceTime, we tell each other everything, and we trust each other.” said Hughes. “That’s really all we can do, being so far away.”

She now has orders to Korea and will soon be reunited with her husband. They know it is only the beginning, but they are prepared for the long road ahead.
