Aviano’s senior noncommissioned officers hosted a dormitory give-back event at Aviano Air Base, Italy, February 11, 2020.

The event offered senior NCOs the opportunity to walk through the dorm campus to take note of things that may need to be fixed throughout the facilities, provide hands-on assistance with ongoing projects to maintain dorm appearance, and also to speak with Airmen about issues they may be having and provide a mentoring opportunity.

“It’s a way for us to get back into the Airmen’s lives so we can invest into their future,” said U.S. Air Force Senior Master Sgt. Jason Parvin, 31st Maintenance Squadron lead production superintendent. “They’re the ones who are taking over the Air Force which means we need to invest in them and build them up to be the leaders we need them to be.”

During the walkthrough, the senior NCOs were able to provide a fresh set of eyes throughout the dorm campus and assisted with cleaning debris from the common areas in an effort to remember their roots.

Parvin explained this was the first time this type of event was organized at Aviano but it is part of an overarching plan with several events to show Airman that their leadership cares and will continue to invest in them.

“The first dorm event we had was a dorm huddle for all Airmen E1 through E4, whether you lived in the dorms or not, and offered the opportunity to get together and have one-on-one time with an NCO,” said Parvin. “We’re starting this whole process to show the Airmen they’re more than just worker bees and that we’re here for them and will work for them.”

For Parvin, he feels that as a senior NCO this is where his real work starts.

“There is a quote from Herb Brooks which says ‘great moments are born from great opportunity’ and I think this is a huge opportunity for us and that’s what I'm excited about,” said Parvin. “It’s a great opportunity to have an impact in an Airman’s life and make a difference in the right direction.”

Although this a new initiative, Parvin says this is just a starting point and there are plans to continue to grow.

“For our next dorm walkthrough event we would like our senior NCOs to invite their frontline supervisors out here with them,” said Parvin. “We can show them what we need to do, how to do it, how to get invested into our Airmen’s lives, and how to ask those difficult questions.”

Parvin mentioned as senior NCOs they should be growing Airmen, developing NCOs into leaders, and further developing fellow senior NCOs as well as company grade officers.

“This is the baseline of the enlisted force structure and what this whole thing is about,” said Parvin. “This is what we need to be doing for the next generation.”
