NUWC Division Newport team wins International Test and Evaluation Association Special Achievement Award

Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Newport

NEWPORT, R.I. — Personnel from the Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) Division Newport Undersea Warfare Weapons, Vehicles, and Defensive Systems Department recently won an International Test and Evaluation Association (ITEA) Special Achievement Award, which recognizes an exceptional act of special achievement in test and evaluation, or a notable project success resulting in tangible benefits.

The Mark 48 Heavyweight Torpedo Test Team earned this prestigious honor for innovative approaches and management processes applied in the initial operational test and evaluation (T&E) of this critical weapon system capability from July 2018 to June 2019. Including Division Newport, the team comprises personnel from the Commander Operational T&E Force, the Undersea Weapons Program Office, Institute for Defense Analyses and Director Operational T&E.

Division Newport team members from the Undersea Warfare Weapons, Vehicles and Defensive Systems Department are Michael Alice, supervisory scientist, a resident of Newport, Rhode Island; Robert Murphy, scientist, a resident of Portsmouth, Rhode Island; Samuel Carroll, ocean engineer, a resident of Providence, Rhode Island; Claire Ryan, scientist, a resident of Portsmouth; Ryan Dropek, APB interim technical project manager/in-water test planner, a resident of Richmond, Rhode Island; Melissa Suursoo, scientist, a resident of Newport; and Charles Lury, torpedo test planner, a resident of Warwick, Rhode Island.

ITEA recognized the team and other award winners at their ceremony in November 2019.

NUWC Newport is a shore command of the U.S. Navy within the Naval Sea Systems Command, which engineers, builds and supports America’s fleet of ships and combat systems. NUWC Newport provides research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, undersea offensive and defensive weapons systems, and countermeasures associated with undersea warfare.

NUWC Newport is the oldest warfare center in the country, tracing its heritage to the Naval Torpedo Station established on Goat Island in Newport Harbor in 1869. Commanded by Capt. Michael Coughlin, NUWC Newport maintains major detachments in West Palm Beach, Florida, and Andros Island in the Bahamas, as well as test facilities at Seneca Lake and Fisher's Island, New York, Leesburg, Florida, and Dodge Pond, Connecticut.
