JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, SC. – Joint Base Charleston, SC. (Feb. 2, 2020) – After a long ride from Al Udeid Air Base, Qatar, Chief Master Sgt. Kenneth Rossa, the Superintendent for the 437th Operations Group, returns to Joint Base Charleston, S.C., celebrating his final flight with family and friends, Feb. 4, 2020.
With 30 years as a loadmaster in the United States Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Rossa landed in a C-17 Globemaster for the last time.
“One day you start flying and you’re the youngest person on the crew and then the next day you wake up and you’re the oldest person on the crew and you’ve been flying for 30 years,” said Rossa. “I fell in love with this job and it’s going be hard for me to leave it behind.”
Rossa’s family came out to the flight line to celebrate his last flight with him. After he was doused in champagne and water and he kissed his C-17 goodbye, Rossa gave hugs to his family members and thanked them for their support throughout his career.
Rossa’s final mission as a loadmaster was to bring home members of the 16th Airlift Squadron, which had been deployed to Al Udeid Air Base since late 2019. Rossa’s official retirement from the Air force will be Feb 7th, 2020.
“There were some days where I thought I could do this for the rest of my life and others where I’d think I didn’t want to be here another moment,” said Rossa. “At the end of the day though, I love that airplane and I love the people I’ve worked with.”
