The first Civil Rights Brown Bag Workshop brought together Team Kirtland members, Feb. 10, 2020, at Gravity on Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico, as part of the ongoing National African-American History Month commemoration.
At the event, topics such as equal treatment, discrimination of various minorities and civil rights issues, policies and laws were discussed.
Kimberley Fahey, Sandia National Laboratories systems manager and Black Leadership Committee Cultural Awareness subcommittee member, coordinated speakers with the Albuquerque Office of Civil Rights.
“We celebrate black history month with events and Martin Luther King Jr. Day,” said Fahey. “This year we partnered with Kirtland’s African-American Heritage Committee to do some joint events and bring awareness to the base community.”
It is important for everyone to know their civil rights and resources, said Fahey.
Attendees participated in open discussions that ranged from the history of civil rights in Albuquerque to current challenges, such as race, gender, sex and disability discrimination.
The next National African-American History Month event will be the Soul Food Taster, Feb. 27, 2020, at the Base Chapel beginning at 11 a.m. The menu will consist of a variety of traditional soul food selections to include fried catfish, fried chicken, sweet corn, collard greens, and red beans and rice. The cost is $10 per ticket.
