Military Members and Love Guam Join to Beautify Guam

Commander, Submarine Squadron 15

Tamuning, Guam (Feb. 8, 2020) – Sailors assigned to Commander, Submarine Squadron Fifteen partnered with multiple military commands, Love Guam and the Tamuning Mayor’s Office in an effort to clean up trash, Feb. 8.

The collaborative cleanup effort, which was organized by Love Guam and the Tamuning Mayor’s Office, was an opportunity for Sailors assigned to CSS-15, USS Frank Cable (AS 40), USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), Naval Computer and Telecommunications Station Guam (NCTS), Naval Airborne Weapons Maintenance Unit 1 and Airmen assigned to 36th Logistics Readiness Squadron to engage with the local community while making a difference in their community.

“It’s all about bringing the military and our local community together,” said Cmdr. Frederick L. Crawford, commanding officer of NCTS Guam. “We’re thankful that the people of Guam welcome us on the island and allow us to serve and live here.”

The three-hour clean up succeeded in collecting over a ton of trash from the bushes and side of the road in Tamuning by Sailors, Airmen and local members of the community.

“I am surprised at the amount of people that were able to come to the event,” said Michael Garma Lasiste, a local community member. “It’s heart breaking to see that people can do this to our community. We’re thankful to have Sailors and Airmen like these to help clean up. It’s moments like these that bring a community together to make a positive change.”

A group Sailors from Theodore Roosevelt showed that volunteers don’t need to be a part of the community to make a difference.

“This is a port visit for me and my team,” said Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class Jose Pando, assigned to Theodore Roosevelt. “We wanted to give back to the community and make a positive difference for the home of our Sailors and military members.”

CSS-15 is located at Polaris Point, Naval Base Guam in Piti, Guam, and consists of four Los Angeles-class fast attack submarines. The squadron staff is responsible for providing training, material and personnel readiness support to these commands. Also based out of Naval Base Guam are submarine tenders USS Frank Cable (AS 40) and USS Emory S. Land (AS 39). The submarines and tenders are maintained as part of the U.S. Navy's forward-deployed submarine force and are readily capable of meeting global operational requirements.
