BREMERTON, Wash. (Jan. 25, 2020) – Sailors stationed aboard USS Carl Vinson (CVN 70) volunteered at the Special Olympics hosted at Mountain View Middle School in Bremerton, Washington, Jan. 25.
Thirty-four Sailors assisted by setting up the event, score keeping and handing out awards.
“The community knows Carl Vinson Sailors are here to help them,” said Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Monique Raymond, president of the ship’s Junior Enlisted Association (JEA), and a native of Austin, Texas. “It’s great for us because we get to go out and learn more about our community.”
The effort was sponsored by the JEA but allowed volunteers throughout the ranks to participate.
“I felt a sense of selflessness because I got to serve a greater purpose than myself,” said Hospital Corpsman 3rd Class Ruby Reed, a native of Montrose, Colorado. “These individuals don’t always have the same opportunities as other people and its great to see them show off their abilities. I felt a bond form between me and the children I was working with.”
Special Olympics events are held monthly at various locations throughout the Seattle-Tacoma area.
The JEA regularly engages the local community by hosting and participating in a wide variety of events geared towards fostering leadership.
“You start a chain effect when you reach out to others,” said Raymond. “So reach out and help people, and watch the seeds you plant grow.”
Carl Vinson is currently homeported in Bremerton undergoing regularly scheduled maintenance.
