“This is a drill. This is a drill. This is a drill,” was broadcast throughout Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) Bremerton Feb. 7, 2020.

The hospital’s security team, without hesitation, armed up with their training weapons and left the security office to respond to the fictitious scenario playing out.

The exercise was held in conjunction with Solid Curtain/Citadel Shield 2020, an annual two-part force protection exercise completed nationwide on Navy installations.

“This event is an annual requirement for security,” said Honree Davis, Jr., NMRTC Bremerton’s antiterrorism officer and physical security specialist. “It’s imperative that we do these drills. It helps commands all over the Navy to practice everything that we know and all the required training that we are responsible to do. It puts those things into practice.”

NMRTC Bremerton’s Security Department personnel responded to a simulated scenario with a disgruntled contractor who used violent means to steal radioactive material from the hospital.

The team was expected to quickly gather information and rapidly control the situation as if it was a real-world scenario.

“It’s important to do these exercises to practice our antiterrorism plan for the hospital and base,” echoed Master-at-Arms 2nd Class Shelby Foster, assigned to NMRTC Bremerton’s Security Department. “It validates our standard operating procedures and preplanned responses.”

The annual exercise is not in response to any specific threat, but is used to evaluate the readiness of the (U.S. Navy) fleet and installation security.

“This Exercise ensures that all of our Sailors in security know what to do in certain situations,” said Foster.

More than just solidifying what they have trained for, the exercise also gives installations a chance to reevaluate responses if needed.

“The biggest thing it helps us is with writing security plans, security operation procedures, and preplanned responses on how to deal with certain activities,” said Davis.

NMRTC Bremerton supports more than 60,000 military families in West Puget Sound, shaping military medicine through training, mentoring and research to ensure a ready medical force and operationally ready force.
