YOKOSUKA, Japan (NNS) – Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 15 kicked off its annual Surface Warfare Officer Summit Feb. 4 for all officers in the SWO community on the Yokosuka waterfront.
The Yokosuka SWO Summit is a four day event where junior and senior surface warriors participate in professional development sessions that highlight advanced capabilities, techniques, tactics and procedures across the surface force.
“We work frequently with our allies and partners to ensure a free and open Indo-Pacific, and to prepare for conflict, should it arise,” said Lt. Cmdr. Rebecca Conti-Vock, one of the coordinating officers for the SWO Summit. “Briefs from key Surface Warfare Community stakeholders help us better understand our capabilities and limitations as well as our interoperability and combined sea power; it's critical to meaningfully operate together and increase our lethality. DESRON 15 works hard to incorporate a variety of subject matter experts into our SWO Summit program in order to engender shared understanding and sharpen our technical and tactical competencies.”
During the summit, DESRON 15 introduced surface warriors to Capt. Christopher Alexander, commanding officer, Surface Warfare Officers School Command, to present the latest updates to SWO training, as well as Alexander Capt. Derek Trinque and his team from Surface Warfare Officer Assignments (PERS-41) to present a SWO community brief, answer questions, and recruit and retain top-performing junior officers for specialized career opportunities and initiatives.
"The PERS-41 detailing team is here to discuss the newest career incentives with the high-performing SWOs of 7th Fleet," said Capt. Derek Trinque, director, PERS-41. "Including changes to the Department Head Retention Bonus payment schemes, changes to the Post-Department Head tours timing, and a change to the commander command board timing to anchor an officer's first look to the board following their 12th year of commissioned service anniversary. These changes look to increase flexibility and predictability in an officer's career."
Detailers also visited Yokosuka ships, providing junior surface warriors direct access to learn more about SWO career paths, and ask questions about the detailing process.
“I really enjoyed working with the detailers from PERS-41,” Said Ensign Sarah Crews. “It’s gratifying to have that one-on-one time to answer all the questions I have about my future in the Navy and what
different career paths I can take.”
DESRON 15 is the Navy’s largest forward-deployed destroyer squadron and the U.S. 7th Fleet’s principal surface force. DESRON 15 is forward-deployed to the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations in support of
security and stability in the Indo-Pacific.
