SAN DIEGO – Naval Medical Center San Diego (NMCSD) was one of 29 Navy Bureau of Medicine and Surgery (BUMED) commands to receive the Retention Excellence Award (REA) for fiscal year 2019 (FY19).

Commands that sustain high levels of military-retention are recognized with this award annually. To be eligible, commands must achieve a minimum score of 90 points during their annual command Career Information Program Review (CIPR). NMCSD scored 96 for FY19.

“This award is an all hands, leadership effort,” said Master Chief Patrick Mangaran, NMCSD’s command master chief. “Congratulations on a job well done, and we can keep our anchor painted gold. It takes a lot of hard work, and it boils down to us doing our job and taking care of our Sailors. [The REA is] beneficial to the entire fleet because, even though we are a shore-based hospital command, each of our Sailors will go on to serve in the fleet and do their jobs.”

In addition to painting a ship’s or command’s anchor gold, the command is also authorized to fly the Retention Excellence pennant. Retention is critical for building a successful team, and the REA is one way to recognize commands that display superior performance in managing and maintaining an excellent CIPR score.

“Your dedication and commitment to career motivation and excellence not only exemplify your superb performance, but also attest to your concern for the personal and professional needs of our Sailors,” said Rear Adm. Bruce Gillingham, Navy surgeon general and chief, Bureau of Medicine and Surgery.

NMCSD’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training, and research. NMCSD employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians, and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
