Mr. Jose “Pep” Tablada III, deputy assistant chief of staff for the Operations, Exercises and Engagement Division, U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Pacific (MARFORPAC), received a Certificate from the Honolulu City Council honoring him for his contributions to the people of the City and County of Honolulu at City Hall, Honolulu, Hawaii, Jan. 29, 2020.
The Honolulu City Council selects an individual, group, or business once a month to recognize for their contributions to the community.
“The Honolulu City Council takes great pride in recognizing outstanding contributions of citizens who serve their country and continue to make an impact on the lives of the families who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our great country,” said Ikaika Anderson, chairman of the Honolulu City Council. “As such, the Honolulu City Council is pleased to honor Jose ’Pep‘ Tablada III for his service and dedication to the Marine Reconnaissance Foundation.”
Born and raised in Kailua, Hawaii, Tablada joined the United States Marine Corps as a Force Reconnaissance Marine, serving for 13 years until he was medically retired in 2005. Tablada still works closely with the reconnaissance community by serving as the president of the Marine Reconnaissance Foundation. The foundation provides financial, educative and transitional support to active duty, former or retired Reconnaissance Marines and Special Amphibious Reconnaissance Corpsmen (SARC) and their families.
“I love our Nation and our Marine Corps,” Tablada said. “Every Reconnaissance Marine or Special Amphibious Reconnaissance Corpsman that we support is a teammate, and their family is my family, so it is my and my family’s obligation to support them. If you get involved and take action, there is no limit to what you can accomplish. If you think you need to do something for the greater good, then just do it.”
A highlight of the support Tablada and that MRF provide is the annual Marine Reconnaissance Foundation Gold Star family retreat. During this event, six Gold Star families, which are families who lost a service member in combat, were hosted for an all-expense paid trip to California to observe the “Recon Challenge,” a competition held in remembrance of fallen Reconnaissance Marines and SARCs. The families were then hosted for a week-long retreat at the Paul Mitchell estate in Lanikai, Oahu. Through the hard work of Tablada and the MRF, the families of these fallen service members were given a chance to heal and strengthen bonds with each other.
Tablada was surprised, honored and grateful to receive the award, but noted that the credit did not belong solely to him.
“I credit everything positive that I have accomplished in my lifetime to my wife and children,” said Tablada, “and to the silent professionals and mentors from the Marine Corps Reconnaissance Community who, through action, have shaped me into the father, husband, leader and teammate that I am today.”
